George McDougall

George McDougall

George MacDougall lost his life in the line of duty on 1st June 1937. His Red Plaque was unveiled on 1st June 2026.

George MacDougall was a member of an Inverness crew called out to a blaze at Beaufort Castle on 1st June 1937.  Tragically he never reached the incident and fell from the engine while it was passing Clachnaharry Bridge and died almost immediately. He died at the age of 45, survived by his wife and three children.

George was one of seven children and also worked as a blacksmith on the railways and a custodian of the Burgh Police Headquarters in Castle Wynd.

Finding the family of George MacDougall was difficult and through social media appeals, and help from members of the public, descendants of George were traced across Scotland, including his 92 year old son; George MacDougall Jr. The unveiling of the Red Plaque was held at Inverness Town Hall and brought together many of George relatives as well as serving and retired firefighters and members of the community.

Calum Munro, a retired Inverness firefighter and historian researched and organised the Red Plaque for George MacDougall said:

“It is only right to have his memory honoured, and to have his family know that George will never be forgotten”

Branch Official Dan Fitzsimmons, of the FBU, said

“His tragic death prompted the service to improve safety for future firefighters. This plaque will ensure that George is always remembered as part of the history of Inverness, and our fire and rescue service”
