Alan Sherratt lost his life in the line of duty on the 24th September 1972. His Red Plaque was unveiled on the 24th September 2025.
Alan Sherratt was killed aged 24, when the fire engine he was driving overturned on 24 September, 53 years ago. Three fellow crew members were injured in the tragic accident.
The plaque, unveiled on Wednesday 24th September 2025, is located on the Alan Sherratt footpath, opposite the Carlton Hotel in Swansea, which was named in the firefighter’s memory.
Speakers at the ceremony included Fire Brigades Union representatives, with tributes from Mid and West Wales fire and rescue service, and relatives of Alan. A recital by the Fire Brigades Union piper was followed by a ceremonial wreath laying.
Fire Brigades Union general secretary Steve Wright said:
“The Fire Brigade Union’s Red Plaque scheme commemorates firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty, with plaques located across the UK in the places they served.
“It is vital that we remember all those who died responding to emergencies. Their service to their communities will always be part of local history, and the history of the fire and rescue service. We remember Alan Sherratt.”
Duncan Stewart Ball, acting Fire Brigades Union regional secretary for Wales said:
“Alan Sherratt’s Red Plaque will stand in tribute to his service to the community in Swansea, as a place for remembrance and reflection for all. The tragic accident that killed Alan aged 24 is a sobering reminder of the dangers that all firefighters face when responding to calls. Fifty-three years after his death, we honour his memory and will ensure that he is never forgotten.”
