Roderick MacLeod

Roderick MacLeod

Roderick MacLeod lost his life in the line of duty on the 21st May 1981. His Red Plaque was unveiled on the 17th May 2024.

Roderick was among the firefighters sent to a severe fire at the 19th Century guest house Aberchalder Lodge, near Invergarry, on 21 May 1981. Firefighters worked for more than five hours to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading. It was described that “The flames had tremendous hold and were coming through the roof.”

During this time, Roderick was on the ground floor of the property with Station Officer Donald Craig, working to extinguish pockets of fire in the living room, when suddenly and the first floor collapsed down onto them, trapping Roderick . Immediate attempts were made by his colleagues to locate him, with firefighters digging with their hands through rubble. He was found trapped under beams, which were too heavy to lift by hand, and hydraulic jacks had to be used. Despite the best efforts of a local doctor and his colleagues to resuscitate him he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 25 year old was married and had served with the Northern Fire Brigade in Inverness for four years. He had previously worked in the Merchant Navy.

The most likely cause of the blaze was determined to have been an electrical fault under the flooring of the bedroom which was directly above the living room.

The ceremony was attended by family members, members of the public, serving and retired firefighters and local dignitaries.

At the unveiling ceremony, FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack said:

“The Fire Brigades Union pays tribute to fallen firefighters through our Red Plaque project. It is our duty to remember those who have come before us, as part of the history of our fire and rescue service and our communities. Firefighters everywhere honour Roderick MacLeod, and we will always remember his sacrifice.”

FBU Scotland Regional Treasurer Seona Hart said:

“By coming together in his memory, we will ensure that his bravery and service to his community will never be forgotten.

“The red plaque will stand at Inverness fire station as a place of remembrance and reflection for all.”

In a touching tribute on the wreath laid by Roddy’s family, they wrote:

“Ruaraidh, you were a true hero. The void you left behind is immense, but your legacy will continue to inspire us.

“We are proud and honoured to have known you and to have the privilege of calling you family. You will forever remain in our hearts and minds.”
