Roderick Nicolson
Roderick ‘Big Nic’ Nicolson lost his life in the line of duty on the 4th December 1995. His Red Plaque was unveiled on the 30th May 2024.
The tragedy happened as more than thirty firefighters fought to free two trapped workers from a silo at Perth Harbour. Roderick volunteered to enter the 40ft-high silo as part of the rescue attempt but became submerged in five tonnes of sodium carbonate ash – described as similar to quicksand. After two hours, the men made it out, but Roderick died from his injuries.
Roderick was described as being a highly respected firefighter who was well thought-of across the service. The 43-year-old served for 21 years with the Tayside Fire Brigade. His wife Yvonne and daughter Amy, who was just nine at the time, later accepted the George Medal from the Queen on his behalf.
FBU Scotland Executive Council Member Colin Brown said:
“Nic’s actions stand out as one of the most selfless and heroic acts I have ever heard.”
FBU Scotland Regional Treasurer Seona Hart said:
“Firefighter Roderick Nicolson lost his life in an act of selflessness and bravery that we will never forget. Today we have come together to reflect on his life and honour his service to his community.
“The Red Plaque we have unveiled will stand as a permanent tribute, and a place for firefighters and the people of Perth to remember Roderick.”
Retired firefighter Jimmy Whyte was on shift on the night of the incident and was pleased to see his former colleague commemorated with the red plaque.
“Nic was a character. He was a very quiet person but when he spoke everyone listened; he would say something funny or interesting. He was well liked.”
Scottish Fire and Rescue Services chief officer Ross Haggart said Mr Nicolson had shown “extreme bravery” in volunteering to enter the silo.
“The sacrifice made by Nic will never be forgotten. Our thoughts will always be with his family and friends.”
The memorial was unveiled at the Perth Fire Station but will be installed at the Perth Museum.
